Default Semantics

چکیده

It is hardly contestable that in interpreting the speaker’s utterance the addressee is frequently driven by the salience of some of the possible interpretations. This salience can be caused by a greater frequency of a certain meaning or by its simplicity, but ultimately it boils down to the knowledge of social and cultural conventions or to some cognitive principles that govern our thinking. Default Semantics concerns such cognitive defaults. Before laying out the principles of Default Semantics, it is necessary to place the default-based views in the research on the semantics/pragmatics interface. According to the traditional view, in addition to lexical and semantic ambiguities there are also semantic ambiguities such as that between the wide and narrow scope of negation in (1), represented in (1a) and (1b) respectively. ‘KoF’ stands for ‘present king of France’.

The Alternating Semantics for Default Theories and Logic Programs

In this paper we propose a semantics for default theories, based on van Gelder's alternating xpoint theory. The distinct feature of this semantics is its preservation of Reiter's semantics when a default theory is not considered \problematic" under Reiter's semantics. Diierences arise only when a default theory has no extensions, or has only \biased extensions" under Reiter's semantics. This fe...

First-Order Default Logic Revisited

Reiter’s original proposal for default logic is unsatisfactory for open default theories because of Skolemization and grounding. In this paper, we reconsider this long-standing problem and propose a new world view semantics for firstorder default logic. Roughly speaking, a world view of a firstorder default theory is a maximal collection of structures satisfying the default theory where the def...

Well-Founded Semantics for Default Logic

Default logic is one of the most popular approaches to model defeasible reasoning. Nevertheless, there are a number of problems with Reiter's original semantics that have led to the investigation of alternative approaches. In particular, Baral/Subrahmanian and Przymusinska/Przymusinski have investigated generalizations of well-founded semantics for normal logic programs to default logic. These ...

A Default Interpretation of Defeasible Network

This paper studies the semantics for the class of all defeasible (inheritance) networks, including cyclic and in consistent networks using a transformation approach. First we show that defeasible networks can be translated, tractably, to default theories while preserving Horty's pathoff credulous semantics for all consistent networks. Using the existing methods in dealing with the semantics of ...

A Modal Logic for Subjective Default Reasoning

In this paper we introduce DML: Default Modal Logic. DML is a logic endowed with a two-place modal connective that has the intended meaning of \If , then normally ". On top of providing a well-de ned tool for analyzing common default reasoning, DML allows nesting of the default operator. We present a semantic framework in which many of the known default proof systems can be naturally characteri...

Fort Lauderdale , Florida . Jan . 1996 . Mixing a Default Rule with Stable

Logic programs containing only at most one form of default negation have been studied in the literature. We describe a class of logic programs containing multiple forms of default negation. We deene a meaning for these programs based on the well{founded semantics and the stable semantics. We investigate properties of the new combined semantics and calculate the computational complexity of deter...
